I am in Halifax this week, and whilst there, walking through an old mill (Dean Clough), I spotted an intruiging metal plate in the road :-
It is fairly obviously a weighbridge, but the odd thing was the text on it – it says ‘Some limestone some sandstone enclosed for some reason’. I did wonder if this was a moment of humour by someone in Avery (the manufacturer), and was delighted by it. A little digging shows it to be a piece of public art as part of the regeneration of the mill. As such, it now leaves me feeling like it is a bit pretentious … and wondering why it being done by an artist rather than an engineer leads me to change my feeling about it so markedly. Probably says something bad about me!
